Yes, I have leather armwarmers. I made them myself. ^-^

You know what the best part about that song is? The fact that my boyfriend and I both love it, so it's like our song, but we're not that sappy yet to have our own song. Yet.

Alright. Here it goes, in no order and using a band only one time;

"The Drapery Falls by Opeth
"Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh" by Bright Eyes
"Dark Center of the Universe" by Modest Mouse
"The City" by The Dismemberment Plan
"With Stength I Burn" by Emperor
"The Sound of Muzak" by Porcupine Tree
"Freedom of '76" by Ween
"Coffee" by Copeland
"Decatur Street" by The Twilight Singers
"Double Day" by The Afghan Whigs
"Hero in a Dream" by Ensiferum
"Your Darkest Hour" by Evergrey
"Grand Theft Autumn" by Fall Out Boy
"Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots pt. 1" by The Flaming Lips
"Dead Winter Days" by Agalloch
"Avatar" by Arcane Sun
"March of the Fire Ants" by Mastodon
"The Descent" by Today is the Day
"Kind of Perfect" by Armor For Sleep
"The Fourth Dimension" by Hypocrisy

These aren't neccessarily the best songs ever written, but they are the most aesthetically pleasing to my ears, and if I were playing their respective albums, this would be the song that I skipped back and played again. I limited myself to twenty...which was very...very hard.

That's cool. My list was very spread out. I mean, you most likely wouldn't like a bunch of the more emo-y ones, such as Copeland or Armor for Sleep or Fall Out Boy. But I'm a very "open-minded listener", as they say. Razz

I hope out of the two you do have, you have "The Drapery Falls", because that song rocks. Just plain and simple. Especially when it switches from the distorted guitar to that wonderful, autumny-sounding accoustic and clean vocals. AHH! Gets me every time.

I'm actually confused about my stance on Bright Eyes. On one hand, I appreciate emotion conveyed through lyrics, and not just because I recognise that music as a whole is about self-expression, but because it adds a certain sense of authenticity to them, as opposed to projecting an image that appeals to a demanding age group. On the other hand, emotion is comedic, especially if you can't relate to it.

The vocals can be best represented as a metaphorical Armageddon. A constant conflict between factors. They're obviously a strong point, except the guy's range seems to falter when he goes for high notes. At some points they blend with the melodic accompaniment, and at others, they seem to whine with either urgency or exasperation. Yes, screamer metal does something similar, but it seems like the voice has more "presence" and more emphasis upon it in emo.

When considering the theme, a Faustian forfeit of youth to a Mephistophelian society in exchange for experience, springs to mind. It's like purveyance of what humanity generally considers to be a form of "wisdom" with respect to experiences in life, to others via the medium of music. And my main problem with that is, that I disagree with the message outright over half of the time. Bright Eyes have a perspective similar to mine, though inverse. Either they comprehend instinct, but go along with it, or they don't, and go along with it. In my view, that holds a dreadful lucidity about it, but most people don't see the need to complicate it further. Probably because I'm less angsty than the next teenager, but I find myself annoyed at their happy-go-unlucky take on life. But meh.

And lastly, the music. It seems somewhat sporadic in it's nature, though it's efficient for depiction of certain moods. The tracks are very, very varied in their musical theme, but at one point in the progress of their respective song, they seem to converge into something in a key major. Something that can only be accurately described as a punk theme. Not "positive" or "negative", just noteworthy. Novelty is something they aren't short of, whether it's in the form of synth, a backup singer, crashing chords (not all in the same song... duhhh) or anything else. The band's strong point is either their honesty, or their skill at lying about their emotions. Either way, that works strongly in their favor, though I prefer a little pretense.

So I'm dabbling lightly right now. Seems like they're wayyy too alien for my tastes, but they may get lucky, and my testosterone may kick in. However, a huge meteor may also collide with the Earth. We can only hope.

One thing I am clear about though, is that I hated their Christmas Album. Christian carols make me want to kill things. Human things. >_0

I hate their Christmas Album as well. Urgh.

I completely agree. Hence why some people laugh at genres like heavy metal. People are often times focused on lyrical content, and when you have some one growling into a microphone about a disembodied sphincter he is having sex with, chances are they're not going to be able to relate. The thing, is that isn't what they were meant for. And as I've said before, Bright Eyes, and Conor Oberst in general(because he does have more than one musical project) has a talent for conveying emotion sincerely through their music and lyrical ability. Which is a great thing, because even if it is comedic, it is definately something most bands in their genre lack.

I've often made comparisons between Conor and Kurt(Cobain), not only because of their lyrical honesty, but because of their sincerity when singing their own lyrics as well. Kurt's voice definately was not "amazing", by any stretch of the word, however, they were there, unaltered and very raw. And that's they way they should be, because with out that you lose everything, or at least, a percentage of what the musician(because the voice is a musical instrument) is trying to convey. As for his range, I honestly believe his voice falters because of the emotional state he is in, or at least, is trying to be in at the time. It's not done 'cause his range can't handle it, because from the songs I've heard, it most definately can. Same with the exasperation. I believe this is supposed to convey his desperation and uncertainty at times during the songs, because, if you haven't read his lyrics, they are written in paragraphs, not stanzas, more like a story. Each song progresses, has a climax, then an ending. I agree that vocals do have more "presence" in emo, because at many times, they are what carry the song, as some emo tends to be centered around three chords of accoustic guitar and a basic bass-snare drum beat. However, it's hard to classify Bright Eyes as 'emo' by the musical definition of the word.

This is entirely a personal issue. As most music is. However, this is something that cannot be changed with guitar chords, drum beats, or plucking harder at a bass. This is something in which the artist chooses and this is where their emotional and empathetic appeal comes into play. I'm sure you're aware that some of the experiences Conor writes about are not his own. But however, this is what is great about being an artist, you not only write and compose for yourself, but you do it for others too. You cannot limit yourself to only looking at things through your eyes, you have to free yourself to use apathy and empathy for other people and their situations to accomplish what you want. It shouldn't matter where the message comes from, as it is intended to be universal. However, I believe you and I both know that music, and art, can never be "universal", by any stretch of the word.

You seemed to contradict yourself here, although I'm not sure you realize it. The music seems sporadic because it is based off of emotion. And human emotion, by it's nature, is sporadic. Especially that of a normal teenager, from whom this music is coming from. Of course he's older now, but he started when he was 14. The tracks are supposed to be varied, because it is hard for people to feel the same way about every little thing. I believe the variation in the tracks and the emotion conveyed is what gives the band such a selling point. Because I find it very sincere. The major key in a minor-based song and album. Hmm, perhaps that's there for irony, perhaps that's just how it worked out. We can only make speculations. I believe novelty is a little harsh, as most bands do use synths and back-up singers. The crashing chords do play a part in the album as a whole, as I'm sure you know. They're meant to be there, and they're meant to make you cringe at first. Sort of a harmony in dischord type feel. I quite like it, to tell you the truth. Haha, well, they don't really pretend, but they don't always use their own experiences for subject matters either for the reasons stated above.

I can understand them being a little too much for you to swallow at this point, but give it time. Smile Who knows, perhaps in a fit of angst, you might find comfort in some of these tracks? I know you are considerably less angsty than the next teenager, as am I, but that does not mean we are immune to it. Razz

*squeals like some stupid fangirl* I love his voice in the capella....its soooo sexy..lol

The cuorus of that song is so chatchy, I can stop singing it. And it has pretty awsome lyrics.

"My hopes are so high that your kiss might kill me
So wont you kill me, so I die happy
My heart fill or burst
to break or bury, or wear as jewelery
Which ever you prefer"

Bring me love songs / Sing me black tunes
Read me kind words /Of sun and moon
Love me freely / Open up to me
Feel me closely / Say you love me
•*YoU kNoW yOu LoVe Me*

Jeeze. I don't think you've ever had nothing to say. Razz I feel special.

Ha, but you only get one of those. Ever. =D
