»Video Game Spending to Surpass Music Spending this Year

Quote

The video gaming industry is poised to overtake the music industry in the US, with global spending on video games surpassing music spending as soon as this year, according to consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. PwC released the data in its annual "Global Entertainment and Media Outlook" report covering 2007 through 2011, which outlines expected growth in the entertainment, film, music, and video game industries, among others.

The information not only reflects the gaming industry's strong trajectory but also serves as a painful reminder that the music industry continues to suffer. EMI recently reported, however, that sales of its DRM-free songs and albums have been good since the launch of iTunes Plus, with CD sales of those same albums dropping during that time. If the gains made by selling DRM-free music online outpace the losses from CD sales, EMI's decision to go DRM-free will prove to be a good one, and the rest of the industry may follow suit.

I imagine that if other companies follow EMI\'s suit that this may be reversed, but who knows? In any case, it does show that people are willing to pay a premium to tell DRM to screw.

I think that's kind of sad but true, music really isn't all that and most of our favorite artists aren't really doing anything that year. A few good albums but not that many, I think. More hypes been put on the games which are buying more commercial/advertising spots.

This doesn't surprise me in the least. I know I spend more on games then I do music. Sad but oh so true.

I spend more on games than music, too.

Although, I suppose the opposite was true when everyone was burning Sega Dreamcast games. Wink

We definitely spend more on games per year than we do music. Of course, you could buy 2-4 cds for the price of 1 game.

And that right there probably says it all...of course we spend more in that case! $50 games...ridiculous. Well I guess we're paying for the idea concept and the hard work it took to design the program?

I agree with you Roxy! $50 a game IS ridiculous. But, I guess as long as we blindly pay it, they'll keep the prices that high.

Its not even so much the price of video games, its more that people buy less and less music each year because of p2p programs. Infact i only know 2 people out here that would ever buy music instead of just downloading it.

a growing trend indeed. however i know a lot of people actually download before buying. They like to hear a little more than 2 songs from someone's album before spending their money on it. You'll be surprised how many albums have JUST 2 good songs on it and the other 13 is garbage. lol
