Avenged Sevenfolds Old Thu Nov 16, 2006 5:34:14 PM #28170 Perm Link
Well like a month back my friend told me how excited he was because he got some concert tickets for the avenged sevenfolds. he signed off MSN and then came back on asking was I serious that I didn't know who the avenged Sevenfolds were and I told him yeah. So for about a hour and a half my friend is sending me a CD. I found them to be really good. I would refer to them as punk rock. A good song by them is bat country.

Tell me if you have heard of them or any of their music?

They are called Avenged Sevenfold buddy, not The Avenged Sevenfolds. That sounds like a folk band...

And yea, bat country is a good song.

Their lack of creativity in both their song structures and lyrics makes me wonder why anyone would ever want to listen to them. It's weird because the one thing that they excel at is mediocrity. They can play their instruments and write songs but they can't do anything that no one else has already done before them. And they can't do what they're doing now better or as good as what anyone else has already done. The only question that these two statements beg is; why are they a band?

The answer; because of this thread and it's contents.

ALSO; There is nothing wrong with folk music at all.

I happen to disagree with Pancakes. Their songs are well written and quite complicated, though I wouldn't quite call it orchestral. I also happen to think that they are quite original. Other bands have tried to merge hardcore with metal, and just fell short. Their Waking the Fallen album is a perfect combination of metal and hardcore done exceptionally well. The album City of Evil is a little less in terms of quality, but only because the frontman blew a vocal chord before recording the album, and can no longer hit some of the notes he used to. However, Pancakes is entitled to his opinion and be sure to look for his new album with his band Pancakes and the Homophobes entitled "A Lesson in Mediocrity" that's going to be released anytime now..............

Other bands have merged hardcore with metal.

Please See: Converge, Botch, Today is the Day, Kiss It Goodbye, etc.

However, if you think that Avenged Sevenfold's songs are complicated I would recommend approaching the above bands with caution because they all write tighter, faster and better songs than Avenged Sevenfold.
ALSO; if you think Avenged Sevenfold is mixing hardcore and metal you should approach the above bands with caution because Avenged Sevenfold is leaning more toward mixing hardcore with hard rock.

Perhaps explore the metal and hardcore genres a bit more before you call this band original.

I know other bands have merged metal and hardcore music. Converge is the only band I'm familiar with from your list. They haven't merged anything. They are hardcore, period. They are an awesome hardcore band. However, I would never call any of their stuff complicated. They completely lack any kind of melody and never use counter-harmonies. Though I can give them a lot of credit because they don't often repeat the same measure more than once in a song. I am curious as to what you consider metal and what you consider hard rock. Definitions have become so incredibly smeared, that different genres of music have become narrowed. What I consider metal is Hammerfall, Iron Maiden, Man O War, etc. Hardcore to me is Hatebreed, Eighteen Visions, Remembering Never, Bleeding Through, etc.

I would consider pure hardcore would be a band like Sick of it All. Converge definitely merges metal into their hardcore in their album, "Jane Doe" and even leave a little room for melody as well. "Homewrecker" has a wonderful melody that's repeated through out the song. I'll admit earlier efforts are not as blurred as "Jane Doe" but that album and the one after has most definitely added variety to their sound and the music world. They are pioneers of the metal-hardcore merge.

Hammerfall, Iron Maiden, ManOWar, etc. are all great metal bands, more specifically power metal bands. Other bands I would equate with them are Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Gamma Ray, Savatage, Helloween, etc. But metal doesn't rise and fall with power metal. There are so many other nuances and complete subcultures in the metal genre that don't follow in power metal's footsteps.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Eighteen Visions is pure hardcore. A lot of these bands actually have other influences in their music as well. As for hard rock, I would consider bands like Drowning Pool, Adema, Tool etc. to be hard rock. And I hear a lot of Adema in Avenged Sevenfold. Sure, they have hardcore influences as well but just because they use heavier chords doesn't mean they're metal.

I don't like hardcore.. It is loud and annoying.

But I do like Adema. Good band.

Your points are well taken, though I don't agree that Avenged Sevenfold sounds anything like Adema. I also agree with your genre qualifications. You've got to be a musician.
