NINE INCH NAILS: WITH TEETH ALBUM Old Thu May 5, 2005 9:36:50 AM #11146 Perm Link
Okay, NIN takes getting used to if you're not into that music, so from the outside, it might sound bad to you, but if you're a fan, then you probably bought the new NIN album, With Teeth, which was released May 3, 2005.

How is it? Out of the 13 songs, there's at least 4 I really think kick ass: The Hand that Feeds, Only, Getting Smaller and especially, Everyday is Exactly the Same. They each are well composed and pretty cool. Another good one is Right Where it Belongs, which is slow.

With Teeth the song is interesting in a good way. All the Love in the World starts off shakey, where he's having trouble hitting some high notes, but then it changes halfway through and really delivers a cool melody and chorus, saving the song from stink.

The Collector is not very good, and I have all his albums. It's rusty, and the melody is weak. You Know What you Are is the heaviest song on the album, though it lacks enough melody as well. Still, it's cool, and it's very aggressive.

Love is not Enough isn't bad, but it reminds me of The Collector a little. Sunspots is decent, with a medium tempo. The Line Begins to Blur has some nice sounds, but some of the verses sound a little rough, lacking melody. Beside you in Time is a filler, mainly a soundscape more than a song in my opinion.

Compared to the Fragile, With Teeth delivers. Compared to The Downward Spiral, it's still cool, but not as aggressive. Compared to Broken, it's pretty tame, and With Teeth compared to Pretty Hate Machine? With Teeth is much better overall, with more good songs instead of a only a few good ones.

Just to give you perspective, these are the NIN songs I really listen to a lot, in no order: Down in It, Gave Up, Slavery, Smashed Up My Sanity, Mr. Self Destruct, Into the Void, Ruiner, The Big Come Down, Eraser, and more... But that's the NIN vibe I like. Heavy, gritty and aggressive, though I don't mind the slower, soothing songs either.

Overall, if you're a fan of NIN, then you'll probably like most of what's on WITH TEETH, as I do. Of course, like any album, some songs take getting used to, as they may sound rough at first, but over time, they grow to your liking...

WITH TEETH: Initial Reaction: 8/10
The Fragile: 7/10
The Downward Spiral: 9/10
Broken: 10/10
Pretty Hate Machine: 6/10

I compare NIN songs to each other, and based on my favorites, that's how I decide which ones aren't as fun to listen to. But what do I know, right?

Oh come on, I loved Pretty Hate Machine.

I downloaded this album a few days before it came out, I like it well enough, and I plan on buying the two disc set in a few days (it's only about twelve dollars, which is good). The Hand that Feeds is too catchy for it's own good, I say. I like the song "You Know What You Are" best, but hey, that's me.

Dr. Nick,

On PHM, I really enjoy Head Like a Hole and Down in It, and I appreciate Something I can Never Have and Sin and a couple others.

The Dual Disc of WITH TEETH is actually on one disc, two sides: DVD and CD. The DVD has The Hand that Feeds Video, and a full interactive catalog of all NIN abums, with a songs sample on each album cover, which is pretty cool. Definitely buy the Dual disc if you find it. I only paid a dollar more for it versus the single CD version.

I really dig the chorus on Don't you Fxxxxx know what you are!!! (You Know What you Are song)

Later,
fs

It's only on one disc, huh? That means I'm going to have to go out of my way to not scratch it...oh well.

Unfortunately enough, I only have With Teeth and Pretty Hate Machine...I've heard that The Fragile is amazing, but I don't own it yet...I should probably hop to it, huh?

Cool. I didn't know if anyone else here liked NIN. I'll have to check out that new album then.

Definitely check it out if you like NIN. There's some great songs on there, and some that aren't so great in my opinion, but overall, With Teeth turned out pretty good. Apparently, Trent already has material ready for his next album, which he says will be available in the next two years instead of five. But he said the same thing for the last album back in 1999. He's very careful about the material he releases.

My favorite With Teeth songs so far are: Only, Getting Smaller, Everyday is the Same, The Hand that Feeds, Right Where it Belongs and the second half of All the Love in the World. With Teeth is decent, and I'm actually starting to like the song I hated at first, The Collector.

Sweet how it took NIN a few years to stop releasing the same songs over and over again.

I haven't checked this album out. I'm not sure if I will. The Downward Spiral will always be their magnum opus and I doubt they'll have surpassed it with this publicity stunt.
